Online competition: Win a copy of Writing for the Web
Writing copy for websites requires skills somewhat different from those used when writing for a printed page, and it is becoming increasingly vital to acquire such skills. Hence the importance of Susannah Ross’s Writing for the Web, published by Chambers Desktop Guides at £6.99 paperback and available from this website.
The first part of her book is an analysis of the way that websites work, and the process that website users go through when they visit a site and particularly the ways that they read and absorb the copy. The idea here is that, if the writer can fully understand the jobs that their copy has to do, the better they will be at producing effective material.
The second part of the book then looks at the techniques of writing website copy: Word choice, sentence construction, paragraphing, use of headings, sub-headings and such things as bullet-point lists. All of these and more are considered, and certainly some of this has to do with website design as much as with copywriting. But giving due consideration to website design is one of the necessary techniques, and on top of all this, the writer has to remember not only the site users but also bear in mind the requirements imposed by browsers and search engines. It’s a big and important subject.
