Initiative for youngsters

Freelance writer Chris High, a Writers’ News subscriber, has created a new writing competition with the hope of transcending borders and encouraging youngsters to engage in writing.

Currently studying for an MA in creative writing at Liverpool John Moores University, Chris last featured in Members’ News with his CD of stories inspired by the music of Chris de Burgh. Now he is hoping to nurture the next generation of writers by offering prizes of book tokens, certificates and trophies to Year 5 students of Saint Margaret Mary’s Roman Catholic Junior School, Dovecote, Liverpool.

‘The idea is to get kids into reading and writing constructively,’ he said. ‘Games consoles and too much television are slowly killing active minds, so this competition is a small attempt at getting those imaginations working, as well as helping the children achieve better grades in their school work. Hopefully, this will be an initiative that will expand to other schools – and to other countries – in the future.’

Chris hopes to run a parallel competition with youngsters from a US junior school in September, with the aim of holding a Christmas story competition.
