Richmond, North Yorkshire, grandmother,
Daphne Clarke, upgraded her writing class end of term assignment
into a small anthology of poems about childhood.
Then a writer friend suggested that she publish it herself.
Childhood in Kaleidoscope, published by her own
imprint, Laurel Press, mirrors retired teacher Daphne’s
lifelong love of children.
A
local printer offered her what she felt to be a good deal:
£446 for 250 copies of an A5 booklet of 32 pages,
including illustrations.
‘Dealing
with a local firm has had tremendous advantages,’ says
Daphne. ‘The proofs were even dropped through my door
and we each felt we were supporting a local venture.’
The finished book was even better than I had imagined,’
she adds.
‘Self-publishing was an exciting learning experience
and I plan to do it again with the book I am working on now.’
