Sylvia’s
double celebration
Longtime WN subscriber Sylvia Kent has
a publishing track record many writers would envy. She has
recently celebrated the publication of her 1,100th article.
This milestone came shortly before Sylvia was awarded the
Harry Brittain journalism prize for an interview she did
with Rabbi Lionel Blue.
Sylvia was particularly pleased with her award, as her Society
of Women Writers and Journalists colleague Frances Clamp
was at the same time presented with the Joyce Grenfell prize
for a children’s story.
‘Both Frances and I have been long-term subscribers
to Writers’ News and the continuing advice within
your pages has helped me win your Freelance Writer of the
Year competition in 1997 and your Community Award a few
years later, amongst other writing competitions.’
Alongside her other writing projects, Sylvia is working
on a ‘celebration’ of the life of the late Society
of Women Writers and Journalists president Joyce Grenfell,
which will be her seventh book.
‘As this is a centenary-based book and she was born
in 1910, obviously I have to get on with it for publication
in 2010.
‘I research every week in the British Library and
I am haunting Fleet Street, the Press Club and newspaper
offices for the information I need for the book. This is
difficult as, being a freelance journalist, I write weekly
columns, so am at the keyboard for long hours.’
